11 New Indian Foods To Love

I knew that once I started writing this post, 7 new foods would seem like such a small number.

I loved almost every food I tried in India.

As such, the number of foods I planned to talk about went from 7 to 9 to 10 to 11.

I have to stop writing this post now or it will become “My 939 favorite foods from India that you should try as soon as possible.”

My favorite eating experiences were the times we got to eat with families – Mrigank’s dad in Bilaspur; Krishna and his parents in Bilaspur; at the Bilaspur wedding with the Dixit girls; all the meals with Bhanu, Keerthi, and Rahul in Hyderabad; and sitting at the table with the Daryani’s in Mumbai.

Almost every meal brought a new food experience with it, but here are my favorite of the new flavors combined into one post.

1. Paneer Butter Masala

2. Malai Kofta
In the north of India it was better than in the south. If you don’t like it the first time you try, have it again. It was different each of the 5 times we had it. My favorite Malai Kofta was the one made by Keerthi in Hyderabad.

3. Masala DosaApparently Kerala (an Indian city) is quite famous for Masala Dosa, but we had it in Goa (a different Indian city) and thought it was simply fantastic.

4. Mumbai Burgers
Breakfast our last day in Mumbai/India.

5. Pav Bhaji (Pronounced Powve Buhhagee)
Butter rolls dipped in a sauce that might be likened to American chili. Same, same… but different.

6. Whatever we had on that same day but that I was too full to eat (Beted/Debet/tebed/???)

7. Aloo Bhujia
An awesome spicy snack that is eaten like Americans would eat peanuts or potato chips.

8. Gulab Jamun
I don’t know how this is made, but it could be my new favorite dessert.
It’s definitely my favorite Indian sweet (so far).

9. Samosa Chaat (Delhi Airport)

10. Soan Papdi
Like chai flavored cotton candy that maintains it’s structure until you squeeze too hard or put it in your mouth. Awesome dessert.

11. Poha (or Powa)
Deliciousness at breakfast time in India.  Some sort of flattened rice that’s dried and re-heated/steamed, then mixed with onion, mustard seeds, turmeric, parsley, and some other spices.
